The 3527 PC/104 serial interface provides two serial ports with 1,500VDC port-to-port isolation that protect the host system from ground loops and voltage transients that are common in remote installations and industrial environments. If not planned for, ground loops and voltage spikes can cause loss of data, latent hardware failures, or even destruction of the serial card or other system components. For maximum versatility without opening the PC/104 stack, each port is software configurable for full-duplex (4-Wire) RS-422 or RS-485. Half duplex (2-Wire) RS-485 mode is also supported. The 'auto-enable' circuit automatically handles the RS-485 driver, which eliminates the risk of bus contention and data corruption. With the driver controlled in hardware, the RS-485 ports are treated as standard serial COM ports by the operating system. Jumpers on the board allow you to suppress ECHO on a per-port basis. The 3527 includes an Oxford 16954 UART with 128-byte transmit and receive FIFOs for fast, error-free communications up to 921.6K bps. The UART includes support for 9-bit protocol and the clock prescaler, coupled with a 14.7456 oscillator, provides the highest resolution for achieving all standard and many non-standard baud rates. Sealevel's SeaCOM software drivers and utilities make installation and operation easy using Windows 98SE, ME, NT, 2000, XP and Vista operating systems. Standard operating temperature range is 0°C – 70°C, and an extended temperature range version offering -40°C – +85°C is also available.

The 3540 is the first PC/104 serial interface module to provide four software-selectable RS-232, RS-422, or RS-485 ports. RS-232, RS-422, or RS-485 mode may be selected independently via software command for each of the four ports, eliminating the need for setting jumpers or DIP switches. The board is designed using the XR16C864 UART, which provides a 128-byte FIFO, 8 times larger than boards designed with 16C550 compatible parts. The larger buffers allow error free operation even in high-speed applications. In RS-485 mode the C4-104.ULTRA offers automatic control of the RS-485 driver enable for trouble free network master arbitration. Additionally, the C4-104.ULTRA allows RS-485 network termination, critical to robust multi-drop communication, to be selectively added to the circuit via a simple software command.
